ImpactMapper allows users to add tags to open-ended survey questions - either by pre-tagging
questions or letting survey respondents tag their own responses (respondent tagging
). With these features, you can categorize responses to analyze open-ended questions more easily and uncover patterns faster. Follow the steps below to use this feature.

You may skip this article and scroll down to the videos below.
1. Create your survey and select the type of question.
NOTE: Respondent tagging
is available only for Short Text and Long Text question types, but Pre-Tagging
is available for all question types. The only exception is the Country Selection
question type, which has neither the Respondent Tagging nor the Pre-Tagging feature enabled.
2. Enter your question in the question field.
Pre-tagging
Pre-tagging lets you assign predefined tags to your survey question, enabling automatic tagging of responses after a response is entered by your survey respondents. This makes tagging of answers to open-ended questions much faster and more efficient.
To use this feature, select the type of question, then type in your question in the question field. In our example below, we are using a short text type of question.
Scroll down to the Pre-Tagging section
and click Add Tag
. This opens up a list of tags you can select from. You can also add new tags.
Once the list of tags is visible, check all the tag names or the tag group that you would like to embed in your question.
Once the tag is selected, it appears in the pre-tagging field (as in our example below, we selected the tag "Purpose of Visit"). You can add more tags by clicking Add Tag
.
Respondent Tagging
Toggle the Respondent Tagging
feature on if you want your survey respondents to select tags themselves from a preset list of tags. Just like pre-tagging, this feature allows for faster analysis of open-ended survey answers. Respondent tagging is only available for short text and long text questions.
Like the steps in pre-tagging a survey question, enter the question in the question field. Scroll down to the Respondent Tagging and enable it as needed. You can choose to have survey respondents categorize their responses with one tag or multiple tags. You can set this up by toggling the Allow selecting multiple tags
button on and off.
After clicking the Add Tag
button, the list of tags shows up. Check the tags you want to use. In the example below, we selected the tags under the tag group 'Experience in the Mobile Health Clinic.'
The selected tag displays in the tagging field. You can click Add Tag
if you want to add more tags to the question.
Once you have completed adding your pre-tags or tags for your respondents, click the Create
and then Save Changes
button.
How will the embedded tags look on the survey respondent's end?
The tags set up via pre-tagging feature
will not appear on the survey respondent's end, though, the answers are automatically categorized based on the tags embedded in such question.
Meanwhile, the tags configured via the respondent tagging feature
will display on the respondents' end, allowing them to select the applicable tag for their answer. This is the core purpose of the feature, enabling respondents to categorize their responses, especially for open-ended questions, directly.
In the example below, we selected the tags under the 'Experience in the Mobile Health Clinic' tag group (as seen above) and those are the same tags that appeared on the respondent's end.
The survey respondent can then choose from the list of tags. In our example, the respondent selected the 'Quality of Care' tag and this is reflected in the tags underneath the question.
The respondents click the Submit
button after completing the survey.
How do tags appear after the survey has been submitted?
Tags in the Responses
page
The pre-tags and respondent-selected tags appear on the survey response. To see these tags, go to the Responses
page and click your respondent's completed survey. In the example below, we are selecting the response from "Submission ID 63034".
Once the selected response is opened, click Edit survey answers
to display tags embedded in the questions.
As in the screenshots below, you can see the tags have become visible such as 'Purpose of visit' and 'Quality of Care.'
Should you want to add more tags, you can click the plus sign (+) icon and/or the text "Add multiple tags that best match your response."
Tags in the Analysis
page
You can visualize the tags applied to the questions on the Analysis
page by clicking the Tags
tab in the chart interface. The example below shows how the sample tags are visualized via charts on the Analysis
page.
Scrolling down further, in the Analysis
interface, you can see a table with the frequencies of your tags as well as the tags used per question.
